OCR: Nikau Palm The tall Palms give the Land and its forests a tropical appearance. The Nikau Palm grows slowly. It can take up to 20 years from the seedling to the time the trunk is formed. The palm usually grows in the forest. The fronds were used for thatching a waterproof shelter. The heart of the Nikau was cooked and eaten. The fruit is shiny red and used as food by the Kaka, a native Parrot. Plants A RARE BIRD, indeed!
