It can take up to 20 years from the seedling to the time the trunk is formed. The palm usually grows in the forest. The fronds were used for thatching a waterproof shelter. The heart of the Nikau was cooked and eaten. The fruit is shiny red and used as food by the Kaka, a native Parrot. Plants A RARE BIRD, indeed!
